Ryan Drant
NEA-General Partner
Ryan joined NEA in 1996 as a Principal, became a Partner in 2002, and a General
Partner in 2004. He specializes in healthcare investments in the specialty pharma,
medical device and healthcare services sectors. Present board memberships include
BENU, Concentric Medical, Esprit Pharma, ExploraMed II, ForHealth Technologies,
FoxHollow Technologies (NASDAQ: FOXH), Intrinsic Therapeutics, PatientKeeper,
Provation Medical, Spine Wave, Viacor and Windward Medical. Past board memberships
include ESP Pharma (acquired by Protein Design Labs, Inc.) and Proxima Therapeutics
(acquired by Cytyc Corporation), and Ryan co-led NEA’s investment in Xcel Pharmaceuticals
(acquired by Valeant Pharmaceuticals, Inc.). Prior to joining NEA, Ryan was with the Health
Care Investment Banking Group of Alex. Brown & Sons in San Francisco where he focused
primarily on the medical device, biopharmaceutical and healthcare services areas.
Previously, he worked in the San Francisco office of Arthur Andersen & Co. Ryan received a
BA from Stanford University.
Matthew Gantz
Acureon founder & CEO
Prior to ACUREON, Matthew was the President and CEO of Hydrabiosciences Inc, a privately
held biotechnology company developing novel, molecular based regeneration medicines in the
cardiovascular arena. During that time he successfully raised $19 million in series B
financing and expanded and strengthened the research and business development capability
of the company.From 2000 to 2003, Matthew was the VP Europe for Chiron’s Biopharmaceutical
Division (NASDAQ: CHIR) where he was directly responsible for $100+ million Infection
Disease and Oncology business. He launched TOBI, the first inhaled antibiotic to be
approved in Europe and championed Chiron’s in-licensing of Cubist’s Daptomycin for Europe.
From 1996 to 2000 he was the GM for PathoGenesis Europe (NASDAQ: PGNS) before the company
was acquired by Chiron.Prior to Chiron/PathoGenesis, Matthew held a variety of US sales and
marketing roles at Abbott Laboratories Diagnostics Division (NYSE:ABT)Matthew served as an
infantry officer in the US Marine Corps, earned his MBA from Harvard and undergraduate degree
from Princeton University.Matthew has a successful commercial track record in building
businesses in the anti-infective space.
Dan Janney
Alta Partners -Managing Director
Dan joined Alta immediately following the firm’s founding in 1996, and was a co-founder
of the Alta BioPharma effort. Dan focuses on investments in biopharmaceutical products
and therapeutics. He has been directly involved in the funding and development of over
25 life sciences companies. Dan is currently on the board of directors of CoTherix, as
well as several private companies, including Alba Therapeutics, Kemia and Phenomix
Corporation. In addition, he led Alta's investments in Endonetics, Ilex Oncology,
Definity Health, Intermune and LJL Biosystems. Prior to joining Alta, he was a senior
investment banker at Montgomery Securities, focusing on life sciences companies. Dan is
also a member of the advisory board for the Rebecca and John Moores Cancer Center at
University of California, San Diego. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Georgetown
University and a Master of Business Administration from the Anderson School at the
University of California, Los Angeles.
Robert J. More
Domain Capital Partner
Mr. More joined Domain as a Kauffman Fellow in 1996, and he became a Partner in 2000.
Present board memberships include Esprit Pharma, Glaukos, Novalar Pharmaceuticals,
NovaCardia, OmniSonics Medical Technologies, TargetRx and Windward Medical. Past board
memberships include ESP Pharma (acquired by Protein Design Labs, Inc.), Proxima Therapeutics
(acquired by Cytyc Corporation) and Onux Medical (acquired by C.R. Bard). Mr. More was also
responsible for Domain’s investment in IntraLase (NASDAQ:ILSE). Additionally, Mr. More serves
as a founding board member for Kauffman Fellows Program and serves as an Advisory Board member
for Montagu Newhall Associates, Fresh Tracks Capital, Okapi Ventures and the Medical Industry
Group, NVCA. From 1997-1998, Mr. More served as the Chief Operating Officer of Small Molecule
Therapeutics, a Domain portfolio company subsequently purchased by Morphochem AG. From 1992
to 1995, Mr. More was with Pharmacia Biotech in sales. Prior to joining Pharmacia, Mr. More
held a research position at Somatogen, a company developing a recombinant blood substitute
that was subsequently bought by Baxter. While attending business school, Mr. More worked
with MedVest, an early-stage venture group in Washington, D.C.
Giorgio Mosconi, MD
Founder President &COO
Giorgio is co-founder, President and COO of ACUREON Pharmaceuticals. Prior to this, he served
as Senior Vice President, Business Development, at Vicuron Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
(Nasdaq: MICU) since the start of operations. Vicuron resulted from the merger between
Biosearch Italia (Nuovo Mercato: MICU.MI) and Versicor Inc. (Nasdaq: VERS). In 2000 Giorgio
joined Biosearch Italia, a newly formed private biotech company, as Vice President, Medical
Affairs and Business Development, where he made a significant contribution to the definition
and implementation of the Company strategy that led to a very successful IPO (220 M Euro).
Between 1996 and 2000, he was European Executive Director for R&D Antiinfectives and
Immunology at Bristol-Myers-Squibb. Giorgio and his team have been instrumental in the
development and registration of several anti-infective drugs, including Zerit (stavudine),
Entecavir, and DDI QD (didanosine) and anti HIV/AIDS combination therapy. Prior to joining
BMS, Giorgio worked at Marion Merrell Dow (now Sanofi-Aventis) as European Therapeutic Leader.
In this role he championed the medical development and supported the launch of Teicoplanin,
which became the #1 selling drug for MMD Europe.
Anders Wiklund
Mr Anders Wiklund has been an advisor to the Biotechnology industry since 1997, when he formed
Wiklund International Inc. The firm focuses on advise in the areas of Long Range Planning, mergers,
partnering strategy, product acquisitions, out licensing as well as divestments/assets sales. Mr
Wiklund spent 29 years with the Pharmacia Group of companies in various executive positions. He
served as Managing Director of KabiVitrum Ltd, in the UK from 1973-76 and from 1976-1984 he was
President of KabiVitrum International based in Sweden. From 1984 to 1993 he served as CEO and
President of KabiVitrum Inc.and KabiPharmacia Inc. in the United States. From 1993 to 1996 he
served as President of Pharmacia Development Corp., Executive Vice President of Pharmacia US Inc
and Vice President of Pharmacia Upjohn. As an advisor Mr Wiklund has worked with companies in the
USA, Canada and Scandinavia, and he was also a cofounder of Esperion Therapeutics Inc. Presently Mr
Wiklund serves on the board of QuatRx Inc, Gyros AB, InSiteVision Inc and EffRx inc. Mr Wiklund
holds a Master of Pharmacy degree from Stockholm, Sweden.
